I guess all my craft hoarding was in vain, cuz still haven’t done it… Can even seem to get into glass fusion w/out u guys…Rachel

    Hi Sue
Certainly missing my classes & you guys & glad to get your email updates. Not a big movie watcher, but I’ve watched lately for sanity.  My suggestions are:
    Bloodlines - series
The Kominsky Method w/ Michael Douglas & Alan Arkin (he’s really funny) 2 seasons
Tiger King – too bizarre to be true!
Series about Olympic Bombings – such injustice
Hope you’re all safe & healthy & keep the emails coming
    Rachel

Well, here I am @ end of your messages while cleaning out my email. I enjoyed reading all of them & a break from my dreadful taxes & paperwork. Haven’t gotten to craft room w/all the damn paperwork medicare, health ins, stimulus ck (not stimulated yet either), unemployment, full time job. My husband is taking furlough from delta so he has been in fl with me – yeah – we will be going to wi sometime soon, my fellow glass buddy Roxy has already left, its just on a wk to wk basis, luv spending time together cuz we are so compatible, a gift from above.  We enjoyed swimming, until the pool closed still indefinitely, started walking, got a sinus infection ugh, playing pickleball in my driveway w/makeshift net, now have kids waiting outside to see if I’m playing (free lessons) lol . Monday we decided to go out on a date, so ate in Culver’s parking lot, went shopping @ bealls, but then Walmart (mistake), came home dehydrated, drank 20 oz of water, threw up, wanted to crawl out of my skin, jumped in shower & washed all our clothes, too emotional, not 4 me yet. Living on a bird sanctuary lake so enjoying all the birds & wildlife, predators so the bad also comes with the good but that’s life, 2 cranes nesting in the mangrove, so we are nervous Nellies. Keep me updated w studio. Hope your whole family stays safe & healthy, say hi to Irv

Thank you for posting. Many of us here in New York look at what is happening in Florida and shake our heads .  You are making wise decisions and are the voice of reason.  I want you to know how much I look forward to taking classes there when I come for the winter.  I am admiring my garden torn as I write this.... stay smart, stay healthy

BRAVO!  I love reading your emails but especially this one as it  relates to how folks are acting ‘out and about’.  I personally know 3 people with covid-19 and I’m quite sure that my client, who is 1 of the 3, will not leave the hospital.  Fortunately for us, they are either in NYC or Stamford, CT.

    Hi, Sue!
Like you I’m tired of staying home, but because I’m considered high risk for several things, beside being old, I’ve decided to continue staying put at home for the foreseeable future. I’m glad you’re posting the Sarasota numbers, and until they start to drop a lot I sadly won’t be making my glass pieces.
    Missing all you guys,
    Barbara

Thank you for this.  I am immunocompromised and appreciate your thoughtful description.  I’m scared and staying put.

    Linda      ........................................................................................
You are so right. If only everyone would wear masks & adhere to the cdc instructions. My daughter lives in Brooklyn, was sick & has seen her business stand still (talent agent) but in NY they can easily and daily see the results of non compliance. I am dying to come back to class but I agree with your caution. Thanks LInda.
    ...............................................................................................Sue,
I am with you 100%.  I live in Illinois and we have been under stay-at-home since mid-March.  Our current order is through May 30th and WI has theirs thru May 26th.  Businesses are allowed curb-side pick-up only and that just started May 1st.  Mandatory masks when in a grocery stores and pharmacies.  Gas stations are also open.
Our small businesses are having a very hard time, but people do prefer to stay safe and stay at home.  No salons are open, etc.
I think the states that are opening back up are in for a rude awakening.  I'm not really a political person, but it seems that the democratic state governors are keeping their states closed longer and the republicans are re-opening for the economy.  Both health and economy are important, but if there is no one alive to buy things later, that didn't really help the economy.
Stay safe and go with your gut feeling.  Don't let people protesting to open force you to open up.
If Disney can lose millions a day and not re-open, that's saying that the medical people are correct, not the economists.
    Sue Benner
    .............................................................................

     agree:  Caution is very important.
You are running a “discretionary” business, which need not open. That is a primary fact, and therefore, delay is feasible if it is for you economically.
But having said that, you may want to be more “granular" in your examination. Sarasota County has about 430,000 people. Manatee County, just a little less. Between the two, there have been just over 100 deaths. Two thirds have been in nursing homes and assisted living facilities (w/ that number including a few workers there).
Virtually all deaths have been of people who have had some other health problem: diabetes, kidney issues, COPD, etc.
Therefore, to open, and urge anyone with any type of health issue, to stay away, makes sense.
If you have any type of health issue, the above may mean you should stay away, or just not open.
Note, too, if you get “granular” about the number of known, confirmed cases in the County, it’s about 1 per 100,000. If you the actual number is ten times that amount, it’s still a relatively small number of people, in the total population.
But having said that, if you open, do so w/ care:
    • Don’t let anyone in who has any kind of sniffle or who has an elevated temperature. Buying a forehead thermometer is relatively easy to do.
    • Require everyone who enters to have a mask on, or if they don’t, give them one to wear. And insist they keep it on the entire they are there.
    • Require everyone who enters to wash their hands. Require them to do so every half an hour while there.
    • Wipe everything down where a person worked, when they leave. Wipe everything down where anyone is going to sit, when they arrive to sit there.
    • Wipe down all the edges of trays, etc.
    • Possibly have everyone wear gloves.
    • Post a few signs, in key places, telling people not to touch their faces - mouths, noses or eyes. And instruct your teachers to watch people and tell them not to, if they see them doing so.
    • Ask anyone who does get sick after being at your place, to notify you. And keep track of who is there, daily, so you can do “contact” warning, if perchance, someone does get sick who was there.
    • Linda Cah

I was reading your e mails re opening and was thinking about coming to open studio, but, and this is a big but, Irv and you are in the worst risk group for the virus.

We may be ok but if any of us are asymptotic carriers, it’ll be a death sentence.
Regardless of what our leaders are saying, we aren’t out of the woods until there is a vaccine. Also, regardless of our leaders, I don’t consider our senior population to be expendable.
    Love you two ❤❤❤

.....................................................................................I sympathize with your frustration.   I can't imagine the level of frustration being a business owner. ....................................................................................Sue,
I know you need your business back but I agree that a great many people don’t take this seriously. I take a daily drive to my area shopping center just to see humans from my car and am shocked at all the people going into Publix without masks. Haven’t been in a grocery store in a month after shopping at a Publix’ first “seniors hour” where I stood in line shoulder to shoulder with more people than I had ever seen in a grocery store. I believe the scientists who say it will get much worse before it gets better. I expect a large increase in cases after a few weeks of this easing of restraints. I believe people think easing means it no longer affects them. Hope you stay safe and that we can help with business when the time is right

  • Going back to old times with a recipe exchange!  As the world is social
distancing right now, many of us are experimenting in our kitchens to help
pass the time.  So you have been invited to be a part of a
    #QuarantineCooking recipe exchange!  Yay!

Please send a recipe to the person (two people in my case!) whose names are in position #1 (even if you don't know them) and it should be something quick, easy, or not, but don't agonize over it. Or just send a link like I did!

After you've sent your recipe to the persons in position #1 below (and only
to those persons), copy this email into a new email, move my name to the top
and put your name in position #2.  Only my and your name should show when
you send your email. Send to 20 friends via BCC.

You should receive 36 recipes.  It's fun to see where they
come from!  Seldom does anyone drop out because we all need new ideas.  The turnaround is fast, as there are only 2 names on the list and you only have
    to do this once.

In the meantime, stay safe, stay healthy, and STAY HOME.
    Happy #QuarantineCooking

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The much-awaited stimulus payouts surpassed a major milestone on its way into millions of bank accounts. According to an internal plan circulated by IRS Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, the first round of payments were sent Thursday.

The first payout is estimated to cover at least 50 million Americans.

The estimated arrival time in your bank account could be on or before April 14, 2020.

    Hello Sue,
Reports I have heard regarding $1,200 check, and maybe others, is if we  have “direct deposit” listed on IRS tax papers, funds will be deposited much quicker….a couple of weeks or less.  If check is sent “snail mail” it may be a month or two.
Please remember to call me when Diane Weaver and I can pick up 3 bowls/platter that were made…..586-596-0379, my cell, or email me.   Thank you and enjoy a Blessed Easter or Passover!

Happy Passover to you and Irv.  Our Seder was different, for sure, but really nice.  We zoomed with my sister, brother in law, niece and my kids and their significant others.  We found a really nice Haggadah on line which we all downloaded and we actually had a Seder with everyone reading parts.  I made some of my usual lived Passover recipes. Bi sent care packages for my kids.  For my son and his fiancé I found a store in Hoboken and ordered them a Passover package... brisket, matzah ball soup, charoset and desserts.  It was really fun to all be together.
Hope everyone in your family are well.  Hope money comes in soon😍  Lynn L

    Good morning!
So I’ve decided to use up my fabric - found when I cleaned to linen closet 😊to make new blouses.
My house has never been cleaner and always smells of Lysol.
I’m hoping Ed doesn’t get used to me cleaning and staying at home - I’d hate to disappoint him when we get the all clear.
I’m also trying my hand at baking bread - do you need any more pavers? I guess there’s a reason I don’t cook 😊
Anyway, you’re right, we should use this time to try new things and reconnect with family (via electronic media).
I’ll let you know how the next batch of bread turns out and hopefully my shirt buttons will stay on!
Staying but NOT sitting at home......

This is excellent Sue!  My office set me up to work from home, so that keeps me busy for 8 hours each day (M-F).  I do make greeting cards and I admit it took me a while to start making them in quarantine.  I have been home under quarantine since 3-17-20 in Illinois, so it's been a few weeks.  But I made 15 Easter cards this weekend and that sure felt good.  Also, I went out in the backyard to start removing leaves from the Spring plants that are coming up.  It was nice to cut a few daffodils for my kitchen too.  Have a safe enjoyable day and keep on emailing.  I'm enjoying your bits of wisdom!

Good morning Sue and Irv and Jini
Seeing you at SSG yesterday was both the high point and low point of my day.  While I loved seeing you all, it hurt my heart to think of what this pandemic is doing to us all. When I go north for the summer, that is by choice and I know I’ll see you again. This pandemic has taken our choice away.
I believe we will get through this, it is a matter of time and as you said, starving the virus by maintaining our distance. Until then, your thoughtful insight in your blog/emails helps make us feel a little less isolated.Thank you!

I believe I have or had a similar “mild” case. Headache, extreme fatigue, general malaise, slightly elevated temperature. I have been able to keep the symptoms to a minimum by taking Oil of Oregano - two drops in a spoon of honey every few hours. It is a super immune booster and the reason I haven’t been really sick in 20 years! You may not know that I was a nurse and my medical background kicks right in. Nursing school was a while ago but the principles remain. Thanks for passing this excellent article along. I hope you are staying home and staying well!

A friend of mine that is working from home and has 4 kids is going out of her mind with ways to entertain them.  Here’s an idea I used to do with my kids when they had a teacher work day off from school and I needed to work.  I made up a scavenger hunt for them.  All items could be found in the house or in the yard. They all worked together instead of fighting!  I gave them a time the hunt would be over and we’d see how many things they found.  I also did the same idea with a treasure hunt.  They had to solve the clues ( called for some math) and at the end they found the treasure!  The treasure can be anything you want.... a new game they can all play together is a great one.
    Hope this helps someone.

  •  Greetings, Sue,
Your birthday seems like a lifetime ago.  I hope you and Irv and feeling okay dokey.  I went to the ER 4 weeks ago with another UTI and got some kind of bug, of course.  I now await Covid test results - my doctor says it takes at least 7 days.  However, there are worse things than napping all the time.
Thanks for the list.  You need to check out  Devs on Hulu; it in not your average non=thinking series.  The Patriot on Amazon is quirky.  You personally might like to stream the movie "Personal Shopper" with Kristen Stewart.
Hope you are creating something for us both.

Hi everyone, Thanks for posting. I miss going to the studio and will be happy when it reopens. As an extrovert, social distancing is a challenge. I am watching a lot of webinars to learn new things. My dogs keep me walking and I find that everyone wants to say hello. I believe we are all missing social contact. I am learning new skills with Facebook and Zoom. As a small business owner, I am a Mary Kay Sales Director, I am learning new ways to help my customers feel good about themselves. Thanks Sue, for keeping us connected. I

Thanks Marilyn. I hope everyone will take part in writing so we can share information with each other.

    Hi all,

Not being used to idle time, I have found new ways to fill it. Thanks to shelter in place, my husband and I finally used the pavers we had and made a nice little patio just outside the lanai. No more dirt tracked into our living area!
Even with projects, we still feel a little isolated so this forum for sharing with my SSG peeps is wonderful!
    Stay healthy
    Susan

Sarasota School of Glass WOW, I have some leftover pavers. Want to come to my house and build me a small patio?

      ...................................................................

I’ve been working from home. I have been trying to clean out at least 1 cabinet, drawer or closet each day. Do I love it? Do I need it? If not, it either gets donated or thrown away. I have also started going through boxes of photographs and discarding the duplicates and photos no one likes. ( once I’m done I’ll have one of those companies scan them all in)

I also set up one of our rooms as a “studio”. We go in there for any type of art instead of working in the great room. It feels like you are somewhere new and keeps things better organized.

I have glass at home so I have put together a couple pieces and will work on more. Hopefully we can set up a drop off day, then Elaine can fire and we can do curbside pick up! ( you can take payments through Venmo, PayPal, Zelle if you have one of those so you don’t have to collect on spot, less contact)

Stay safe and healthy!! I miss you all!

      Dawn

Sarasota School of Glass The first few days of staying home I cleaned 3 closets, got rid of a ton of stuff, cleaned my home studio and actually produced some glass art and plan to go thru photos also. I think we're all on the same page, doing things we just never get a chance to do ......
      ..........................................................................

At this moment while missing my "happy place" on Lawton at SSG and all the people that make it special. I hope everyone there remains healthy and safely distancing so we'll be back. And thank you for making it such a special place, all of you.

Clear time gives us all a creative moment. Enjoy new things like taking a walk aound our compound of 400 acres(gated community). We're surrounded by wildlife, trees, waterway (kayak) taking us out to Palma Sola Bay over to AMI. I have found precious time to reconnect with friends (my life's journey)--and my Argentinian cousin found me too.

I sometimes go to the virtual museums sites. Time travel to museums! https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/75809/12-world-class-museums-you-can-visit-online  Stay away from the TV though will look for the program Sue worte about. Jordan has always been on my bucket list. Another site I like  http://www.virtualfreesites.com/museums.museums.html Who knows we may come back to SSG a bit smarter.

Returning to Irv and Sue with changes? This is really exiting. I need Sue's glue and a stand or two. Glass classes and studio time are my passion however spending it at Sarasota Glass has been the best for us all.

Hope everyone is well and safe...this distance and seclusion makes me feel I'm living in bunker...lock down...however, repeated walks open it up and then going to a web site - a cultural museum makes good sense.

Oh Charlie out for TP--he forgot to ask at our designated time 7AM. No worries, he returned with a nice haul of wine.

      Love to you all, Serene

PS My garage studio with a tiny table is no competition for SSG but I'm grateful for the skills they taught me. I need their kilns soon, and appreciate Elaine so much!

Sue, I like the idea of your creating the blog.  And, of course, you may use my name to help with the blog and/or the school.
As for me,  I am really retired from the activities.  At the age of 94,  I 'm smelling the roses for a longer time.
I just hope the world and your business will get back to normal sometime soon.  Good ;luck.
      Best to you and Irv.

      ........................................................

Hi Sue, I am thinking of you and thinking that this is a great time to get creative. Here are the thoughts I've shared with many friends.

I hope that everyone is well, healthy and happy, if not a bit confined to your own space. The beauty of living in Sarasota area is we do have space, we do have incredible weather. Over the weekend as we were working in the gardens, preparing for new plants, removing old tired ones, I saved a few, cleaned them up and created a new Ikebana arrangement.

I believe most of you know that I am a practicing sensei for the art of Ikebana, 6th C. cultural art of Japan, now for almost 38 years. The Motto for Ikebana International, our world-wide organization is "Friendship Through Flowers". I'd like to share this Ikebana arrangement with all of you. Think of new, renewal and lift your spirits. Mother Nature and her beauty is all around. Let this keep you feeling positive and looking forward to when we can all share our creative abilities together again.

There is beauty in even the smallest thing: two birds, one magnolia branch, five terrestrial orchids and one pittosporum.

      Polly

Nina F.B.  You would be proud of me, Sue! One thing I do every day is a little glass work; I pull out my current projects and look at them again, which results in more creativity. 🤗I am reading great books and articles about a myriad of subjects and keeping in touch with family, friends and colleagues. Nice to read what others are up to; looking forward to seeing each other again in the future!!

    • Sue,

I was sadden to learn the news that you are closing from "my happy place." Then too sharing my northern studio note about restrictions was painful hoping we'd never have to...
Your studio is my happiest place! I attribute my significant lupus remission to your studio (talent well/? Hmmmnot so good...slow progression).
I love everyone there from Eliane to Irv to Sue B to Jin to the best Director Sue. Something special about being there!
This will pass and we especially need to be prudent. Look forward to our reunion soon.

PS I'm a far better caterer that glass cutter! I'll provide that skill....hopefully all stay healthy.

  • Good morning Sue and Irv and Jini

Hope money comes in soon😍

  • On this Passover we hope to become free from the sickness, fear and restraints of this pandemic. We are grateful for those who combat the virus and ensure our safety and health. Stay Home ~ Stay Healthy ~ Stay Safe!
